Established in 1927, Midway served as Chicago’s primary airport until the opening of O’Hare International Airport in 1955. Today, Midway is one of the busiest airports in the nation and the second-busiest airport in the Chicago metropolitan area and the state of Illinois. CCS performed master plan studies involving a new 4-story parking structure with a capacity for 3,200 cars; a CTA parking and pedestrian walkway relocation; and renovations to the landside terminal building, airside concourse building, and central plant. Extensive infrastructure work included the relocation of Cicero Avenue to remove the “S” curve near the airport and rebuild the street one block east of the current location. New traffic signals at entry points to the airport were coordinated with the Chicago and Illinois Departments of Transportation.
Concourse A Infill
CCS worked on a 50,000 SF addition to an existing 2-story satellite building at Midway, located adjacent to Concourse A. The addition houses a 300-person passenger hold room, gate check-in counters, a mini food court with seating, concessions, and an airline operation office space. The project also included a temporary walkway and relocation of existing utilities.
