About The Project

The 1.2 million-square-foot flagship John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital is a 450-bed teaching hospital serving as the hub for Cook County Health for delivery of specialty and sub-specialty care.

It is home to one of the busiest Level 1 trauma centers in the nation, and the hospital’s emergency department treats approximately 120,000 adults and children annually.

CCS provided ongoing cost management support during design, comprising value engineering and change order analysis. CCS also provided on-site personnel to assist with the construction administration of the three-year build-out of the new replacement hospital that is the flagship of the Cook County Health and Hospitals System. The 464-bed hospital’s anchor has 228 medical/surgical beds with dedicated units for obstetrics, pediatrics, intensive care, neonatal intensive care and burns.

The new facility replaced a sprawling 13-building campus and combines specialized clinics with inpatient and surgical units in a single facility. The complex clusters related specialties and centralizes key areas such as emergency, specialty clinics, clinical and stat laboratories, and imaging and surgical suites to promote ease of accessibility for patients and operational efficiency. The project also included a 52,000 SF central power plant and two new parking structures with a capacity for 2,300 cars.
